Hi everyone, we received an email in regards to the performance of a play based around the mythology of the Trojan War. Please see the email below. "Hello,
I am working with Melia Theatre Company to produce their new work-in-progress, THE NEW WARRIOR, written and directed by Mark Anthony O'Reilly. We are presenting an excerpt of the play at this year's Scene + Heard Festival on the 15th and 16th of February in the Main Space at 2pm and we would love to see you there!
The play is centred around Pyrrhus, son of Achilles, the last hope for the Greeks to win the Trojan War. Pyrrhus must justify his actions to the judges of the Underworld (us, the audience) by showing us how he was coerced through effective propaganda and deceit to do the things he did. He was, after all, just following orders. More than that, he was following his destiny. What does it mean to be a hero? What does it mean to be a man? Does the end justify the means? We are all capable of great cruelty - be it for greed, glory, gullibility, validation or the self-mythologising idea of destiny. Are we really to blame if we allow ourselves to be led astray?
The play explores themes of masculinity, propaganda, living up to the legacy of one’s family, war and the nature of power. We are excited to present our new work in progress as a part of the Scene + Heard Festival this year.
The festival offers a unique opportunity to show our work at an early stage and get feedback from a live audience, and that is where you come in! We would love to see you there on the 15th and 16th of Feb at 2pm. Tickets are just €13.
